There are many unanswered questions I have about Pan's Labyrinth. First of all, why is the title called Pan's Labyrinth? I don't recall anyone being named Pan. Why couldn't it be named using one of the characters actual names? I guess it could have been lost in translation from language to language.
Second, throughout the entire movie I thought the fawn was evil or some sort of menace. He just had that creepy way about him and even the way he spoke made me scared. Also, when he took the dagger from Ofelia, he wouldn't tell her what it was for. He just shrugged it off. I don't know if it was just me over-reacting, but it seemed like he was going to kill her. The dagger ended up not even having a point to it anyway because she was shot, not stabbed.

Well the movie is really called "The Labyrinth of the Fawn" in Spain/Mexico but in America it's Pan's Labyrinth because of the mythical fawn named Pan.
ReplyDeleteAnd I had the same reaction to the Fawn the first time I saw the movie. He was so freaky and I was just waiting for him to turn around and betray her! But I think that's just what the director wanted: a feeling of unease that didn't come to anything because of the simplicity of the story.
Ahh got ya. I didn't understand why they chose Pan.. It was confusing. Anyway, the fawn was jsut creepy, but in the end, I enjoyed actually seeing it be humble when they were in the giant hall.
ReplyDeleteYah i had the same reaction with the fawn too. In the beginning he just seemed like he was doing things for himself rather than helping the girl but then in the end when she is in her kingdom or whatever he shows his allegiance to her and then i thought that he was just trying to see if she could be the one. It wasnt his job to be nice to her. He was just testing her.
ReplyDeleteYes, like Ben said, I think he was testing her. So when she failed at the one test, of course he was going to be furious. And he definitely was supposed to seem evil when he wanted her to sacrifice her brother. Though he definitely had a shifty way about him the rest of the time too!
ReplyDeletePan's Labyrinth definitely has some confusing moments. Questioning the fawn's virtue is not uncommon for most people.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with the whole "Pan" thing. I remember years ago when I watched the special features of this movie I was told the reason why it was called Pan's Labyrinth. Thankfully we were reminded in class today.
I was actually wondering the same thing! funny, but good to know thats why it's titled that. But yeah, I really liked this movie because it was so different than any other movie I had watched. I thought it had some confusing parts but I think the good parts made up for them.
ReplyDeleteSorry to be a jerk but it's Faun, not Fawn. And I agree with how shifty the faun is, it seems as if he has a seperate agenda from the rest of the group and is working for himself. Yet, can we look at the way the faun acts as a part of Ofelia's imagination.
ReplyDeleteIf we see the faun as being much like the captain, where he says things but then acts in an entirely different fashion. Could this be a made up creature in her head that she thought up and is reflecting the way that people are acting around her?
Yeah I noticed that I spelled faun wrong later that night when I was sitting in bed lol. Anyway, I'm glad I am not the only one who was confused as to why the movie has such an interesting title! All I have to say is that the faun made the movie much more interesting because it made you think that you knew what was going to happen. I wish the movie would have went into more detail about what happened when she "woke" up that sweet looking monster!
